Through the current medical technology procedures like IVF, surrogacy, and donor eggs, parenthood has been made possible for thousands of parents who thought it impossible. The reasons vary from same-sex relationships or a medical condition that results in infertility. Whatever the reason, many women are considering egg donation in Ontario as a real possibility to residents bearing children.

It is as simple as combining donor eggs with your partner’s sperm and the embryos transferred to the mother’s womb.

Who is a candidate as an egg donation recipient?

Some of the reasons women opt for this are:

  • Genetic conditions that you do not want to pass to your children
  • Over the age of 40
  • Diminished ovarian reserve
  • Poor response to ovulation induction
  • Premature menopause
  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Removed ovaries
  • Same-sex relationship

The cost

The cost may vary depending on the use of a donor from your family, frozen donor eggs, or an anonymous egg donor. The success rate with the implantation of donor eggs ranges from 48% to 56%, depending on the study you read.

How does the process actually work?

A match is made between the donor and recipient, and menstrual cycles are synchronized.

The donor begins fertility medication and is monitored for 10 to 14 days before egg retrieval.

The recipient will take progesterone supplements.

The egg is fertilized, and one or two eggs will be implanted into the uterus at a fertility clinic or hospital.

The recipient will be tested to verify pregnancy.

After verification of pregnancy, the recipient continues progesterone and estrogen until week 10 or 12.

If the recipient is using frozen donor eggs, cycles do not need to be synchronized. However, the egg needs to be chosen, thawed and fertilized. All other steps are the same.

Many intended parents ask a sister or other close relative to act as a donor, but just as many opt to use a fertility clinic or agency.

In the long run, it will depend on what works best for the two of you as potential parents to make the best decision about egg donations.
